A complete specimen of impressive size. The fossil owes its unique \u201ccharm\u201d to the dislocated arrangement of its bones. This is the second Messel crocodile that, to our knowledge, has been offered for sale in decades. A \u201cperfect\u201d specimen was most recently auctioned off for \u20ac200,000.    <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #808080;\">Offered on behalf of the customer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">no longer available<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Diplocynodon darwini \u2013 The Armored Crocodile from Subtropical Messel<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #808080;\">The <a style=\"color: #808080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.grube-messel.de\/images\/pdfs\/ToedlichesParadies\/Darwin-Doppelhundszahnkrokodil_Diplocynodon_darwini.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Darwin\u2019s double-toothed crocodile<\/a> is arguably the most famous reptile find from the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Messel Pit. While the primitive horses often dominate the headlines, it is these archaic armored lizards that complete the picture of the \u201cDeadly Paradise\u201d from 48 million years ago. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #808080;\">But don&#8217;t be fooled by its relative abundance: A really well-preserved specimen, in which the bone plates of the back are still connected, is a paleontological rarity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #808080;\">More than an icon: the name says it all<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><strong>The distinctive &#8220;dog teeth&#8221;:<\/strong> Its name comes from a special pair of fangs in the upper and lower jaw that remain visible from the side when the mouth is closed &#8211; a feature that distinguishes it from most modern crocodiles.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><strong>A bridge animal of evolution:<\/strong> <em>Diplocynodon<\/em> combines characteristics of alligators and caimans. It provides impressive evidence that these groups were once native to Europe before they retreated to their current distribution areas. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><strong>Complete osteoderm armor:<\/strong> In contrast to many modern relatives, <em>D. darwini<\/em> had an extremely dense armor consisting of bony skin plates (osteoderms), which was even pronounced on the abdomen.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #808080;\">The fine details &#8211; what collectors look out for:<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><strong>Precision of the transfer method:<\/strong> Since Messel fossils must be embedded in synthetic resin, the quality of the preparation is crucial. Note the delicate finger and toe bones, which are often preserved right down to the tips of the claws. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><strong>Skull details:<\/strong> The fine pores of the bone surface and the pointed, cone-shaped teeth are perfectly visible in the matrix of <strong>cranial<\/strong> specimens.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><strong>Compact aesthetics<\/strong>: Young animals of around 15-30 cm in length are particularly sought after. They are ideal for displaying on aesthetic plates and often have an even more delicate skeletal structure than the adult animals, which can be up to one meter long. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #808080;\">The centerpiece for the reptile collection<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #808080;\">A <em>diplocynodon<\/em> is far more than just a &#8220;by-catch&#8221; from mammal excavations. It is a symbol of the Eocene ecosystem and, as a <a style=\"color: #808080;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.natucate.com\/blog\/wissen\/ranger-ausbildung-afrika-reptilien-teil-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;living fossil&#8221;<\/a>, is in no way inferior to the large finds in terms of its scientific brilliance. <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Diplocynodon darwini crocodile from the Eocene of Messel (oil shale).
