It is the face of the Hunsr\u00fcck slate.  Even though it is considered the most common trilobite in the region, a perfectly preserved specimen &#8211; often transformed into radiant pyrite &#8211; is an aesthetic masterpiece that bridges the gap between biology and art.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #808080;\">The fascinating details &#8211; what makes Chotecops ferdinandi so special:<\/span><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><strong>The &#8220;hyper-eye&#8221;:<\/strong> One of the most spectacular features of this genus is the schizochroal eye. The large, individual lenses are often so excellently preserved that the complex optics of this hunter can still be studied today. Recent research even points to a <a style=\"color: #808080;\" href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8484558\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">highly complex visual system<\/a> that concealed a separate small compound eye under each lens &#8211; a unique feature in the animal kingdom.  <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><strong>The &#8220;pustule&#8221; glabella:<\/strong> Typical for this representative of the Phacopidae is the strongly curved glabella (the front of the head) covered with fine nodules (pustules). This structure gives the trilobite a striking, three-dimensional presence on the dark slate. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><strong>Variability of husbandry:<\/strong> It is found in two fascinating forms of conservation:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><strong>Elongated:<\/strong> Spread out in full splendor, often with visible thoracic segments (typically 11 in number).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><strong>Curled up:<\/strong> In the classic protective posture reminiscent of modern woodlice &#8211; proof of the dynamics at the moment of embedding.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"color: #808080;\"><strong>Soft tissue miracle:<\/strong> The real highlight for Hunsr\u00fcck slate specialists! Due to the unique pyritization in Bundenbach, structures are often visible on this trilobite that normally disappear: <a style=\"color: #808080;\" href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/File:Chotecops_ferdinandi_fossil_trilobite_(Kaub_Formation,_Hunsruck_Slate_Group,_Lower_Devonian;_Budenbach_area,_western_Germany)_2_(15160354959).jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Feelers (antennae) and walking legs<\/a> can protrude from the body like fine golden threads when masterfully prepared.  <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><span style=\"color: #808080;\">A leading fossil with a history from Bundenbach<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"color: #808080;\">Already described in 1880 in honor of the geologist Ferdinand Roemer, <em>Chotecops ferdinandi<\/em> is today considered the <a style=\"color: #808080;\" href=\"https:\/\/rlp.museum-digital.de\/object\/146\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">leading fossil of the Hunsr\u00fcck Slate<\/a>.
