Fossil purchase pricing - what is your fossil worth to me?
“What is a fossil worth?” asked the magazine “Der Spiegel” in an article in 2013 and gave the succinct answer: “A fossil is worth what is paid for it.” The essence of the statement is due to the fact that, unlike diamonds, for example, whose value is determined according to defined criteria, pricing fossils is more difficult. Here, every piece is unique.
This is exemplified by 4 ichthyosaur skulls. All show teeth and the scleral ring, the logo of Fossiland. They differ in terms of completeness, preservation and extent of the restorations. This is why their market prices vary by a factor of 4.
Price differences may seem surprising at first glance. However, the pricing is comprehensible on the basis of objective criteria. When it comes to valuation, what could be more obvious than seeking the opinion of a paleontologist/geologist? If you have dental problems, you should of course go to a dentist you trust and not to a sales representative.

How you can sell your fossils directly
If you are interested in a purchase, please contact me. My offer is usually based on your photos. These do not have to be professional, but should be sharp. The best thing to do is to send an email to info@fossiland.de and attach your photos or upload them to the cloud (e.g. Wetransfer or Dropbox). If possible, please describe your item or collection. I usually get back to you within 48 hours. A visual inspection is also advisable if the pieces are outstanding or if a replica cannot be ruled out.
If I am interested, you will receive a binding purchase price offer for Fossiland, which you can examine at your leisure. If you do not accept the offer, you will not be under any obligation.

As a connoisseur of the fossil scene, the market and a long-time visitor and exhibitor at fossil fairs, I have the necessary market knowledge to reliably value individual pieces or entire collections.
For me, the fossil business is not my main job, but the most beautiful secondary thing in the world. If a fossil “smiles” at me, I am therefore in a position to outbid the usual market offers of other fossil dealers.
